Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common condition. You may be surprised to know that it that affects one in every five people in the UK, upsetting their digestive system in various ways. People with IBS may have five or six flare-ups a year and the symptoms can vary.
Typically, though, symptoms can include flatulence, a bloated or painful abdomen, incontinence, diarrhoea, constipation, passing mucus, feeling tired, feeling sick, and feeling depressed. And it affects more men than women, and with most people it starts in their twenties or thirties.
At their initial consultation clients have the opportunity to talk about the issues that they are wanting help with. One of my first questions I will always be, would be to ask if they have been subscribed any medication from their GP for their condition.
The cause of IBS is unknown. However, not knowing the cause of IBS doesn’t mean we are powerless about how you can cope with it.
People can feel really embarrassed because of their IBS symptoms, and some people experience such feelings of anxiety and depression that they lead very solitary lives.
