Cure Your Emetophobia and Thrive

This is a research-backed, evidence-based programme which will support you in both overcoming emetophobia (the fear of being sick and/or of vomit) and learning the skills to thoroughly make the most of your life.

I offer a programme for adults and a separate programme for young people aged 11-18. Please note both programmes are not therapy and do not involve exposure therapy. Instead they are research-based training programmes which help you build the psychological foundations necessary to completely and permanently rewire the way you feel, think, behave and react. The aim of the programme is not to just learn to live with your symptoms, it is to overcome emetophobia and change your life for the better.

Over a course of usually 6-8 weekly sessions, I will support you in building strong psychological foundations. This work is supported by a workbook, written by Rob Kelly who devised the Thrive Programme based on his unique insights gained during twenty five years of clinical experience teaching people with emetophobia to take control of their beliefs, thinking, feelings and imagination. Having this workbook, along-side your weekly sessions with me, really brings the Thrive programme “to life” to maximise your success.


Fly Happy

What is Areophobia?....(The fear of flying) 

Areophobia or the fear of flying is the excessive worry about air travel.It is believed that one in ten of the population have a fear of flying but the figure  may be higher. This phobia can be linked with anything to do with flying, from planes to helicopters to airports. It also can be linked with psychological aspects such as panic attacks, claustrophobia or post traumatic stress disorder. Our fear of flying can increase our anxiety levels to such an extent that many people who have this fear will avoid flying all together.

What do people fear most?

When talking to my clients about their fear of flying many will say that its their fear of being out of control of their emotions on the plane that is really difficult for them to deal with. They worry that they may have a panic attack or loose control of their bodily functions or become hysterical. Others may be more frightened about external factors such turbulence, faults on the plane, bad weather or the skills of the pilot that they worry about the most. Its the feeling of extreme embarrassed and the worry about what others may think of them they find most difficult to deal with.

Who is it for?

You may be one of those people who,in the past, found flying really easy but now its not the case and you're worrying because you don't understand why you have been getting progressively more anxious. You may have experienced a sense of extreme anxiety that appeared “out of the blue" at one time and you're worrying that it will happen again. You may have been on a flight that was very difficult and frightening and now you're extremely worried that it will happen again next time they fly.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Irritable Bowel Syndrome resolved quickly and easily - in Ely, Newmarket and Cambridge - using the Thrive Programme, and Hypnosis hypnotherapy the Thrive way 

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is thought to affect as many as one in five of the population at any one time.  Its symptoms can vary from person to person, but typically one or more of the following symptoms may be experienced:

  • Constipation
  • Diarrhoea
  • Bloating (that may subside overnight, only to return the next day, and may occur after eating a meal)
  • Flatulence
  • Abdominal pain or cramps
    • may, or may not, be reduced by passing a stool
    • may be specific to the lower right side or tucked up under the right ribs
    • tucked up under left ribs, or if the pain is particularly bad it may move into the left armpit
    • in women, left sided abdominal pain during sex
    • or more generalised pain or cramping
  • Painful swallowing
  • Noisy gurgling stomach (may be loud enough to cause social embarrassment)
  • Variable, erratic and unpredictable bowel habits
  • Severe short stabbing pains in the rectum
  • Passing urine more often
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Depressive symptoms
  • Anxiety and stress-related symptoms, which may interact with the gut symptoms

IBS is a condition that is often hidden by the person experiencing its symptoms.  The media is certainly trying to move us towards a point where we are more comfortable talking about bloating, stomach cramps, constipation or diarrhoea, however, if you suffer from the condition, you will know how difficult it can be to talk about what can be very embarrassing symptoms.  For example, how do you tell the person interviewing you that you are suffering with severe flatulence?  How do you explain to the coach driver that you need to stop for the toilet (again, having only been 5 minutes previously)?  How do you leave in the middle the funeral to find a toilet?  Or how do you tell your new partner that you dare not go on a trip in case you have a bout of IBS?

If you are someone who suffers with IBS, you will also know only too well that the symptoms can seriously affect and limit your ability to enjoy life to the full.  It is the severity and frequency of symptoms that can be most troublesome and intrusive for sufferers and it is a condition that can be notoriously difficult to treat successfully. 

Despite this, there are many cures and treatments recommended by the ‘experts’ and these include a large number of medications and herbal treatments (e.g. for diarrhoea, constipation, cramps and flatulence or bloating); dietary changes and restrictions; exercises – different types of exercise seem to be in vogue at different times (e.g. yoga is currently experiencing an elevated status as the exercise ‘cure’); and lifestyle changes or restrictions. 

However, the disappointing reality for IBS sufferers is that of the many treatments listed above, which are variable and often disappointing in their treatment outcomes, all aim to treat the symptoms, rather than removing or resolving the root cause of the IBS.  This will mean that the person will always likely to have a susceptibility to IBS, the symptoms of which could be moderated with treatments, but that may always return.

Thrive Programme for Children and Teenagers


You may be concerned that your child isn't as happy as they otherwise could be, and wish there was something you could do to help them? If your child is lacking in confidence, it can be easy for them to create fears and insecurities when faced with challenges in their lives.

They may have social anxiety, and feel harshly judged by others, they may feel shy and unable to speak up for themselves. When children lack belief in their ability to cope with situations, this can lead to avoidance of situations, such as socialising or school itself.

This is a very powerful, six session training programme that helps you and your child to really understand themselves, their beliefs and the thinking is causing their anxiety and symptoms. Once you have that insight, it can be very easy to think differently, increase self esteem, feel more in control and change old patterns of behaviour.

For children under the age of 16, it is beneficial if one or both parents be present in some or all of the sessions. This will help you to gain the understanding of why you child has the issues they have, enabling you to help and support them outside of the sessions. Very often, frustrated parents come to me not knowing how to best respond to their children’s behaviour – unfortunately some parenting styles and decisions (despite parents best efforts and intentions) can actually lead to symptoms and anxieties escalating in children.

Thrive is most effective with children over the age of 10 as they are at an age where they can understand, process and put into action what we discuss in the session. That said, bright children who are mature for their age who are under 10 can still certainly benefit.

The Thrive Programme is a life-changing psychological training programme that empowers you with the skills, insights and resources in order to take control of your life, overcome any symptoms or problems you have, and thrive! 

The pressures that children can face these days are considerable. These may be social and peer pressures – from social media for example; pressures from parents, schools and teachers especially at exam times, pressures from siblings and most significantly, pressures from them selves. They may have been bullied, or refusing to go to school. Unfortunately too, they may have experienced some form of abuse or trauma.

All of this can leave them feeling despondent, lethargic unusually quite or feeling ill, down right miserable or aggressive, completely unruly or difficult to engage.

The Thrive programme brings together scientific research and years of clinical experience to provide a 5 week course of guided learning specifically designed for younger people.

Based on the Thrive Programme principles within the main Thrive book the course is simplified and made easily accessible for younger people.

How it works

The parent/s and child/young-person will be invited to come for an initial consultation. This is an opportunity for everyone to meet and explain about their positive and not so positive aspects of their lives and the Thrive programme for Teenagers will be explained.

My role as the Licensed Thrive Consultant is to bring the programme alive for the young person so that they can gain the maximum from the programme.

If the young person would like to work with me and are supported by the parents we would book a series of appointments and begin the process as soon as we can.

I can confidently say that if the youngster works with me, and has the ongoing support from their significant adults as their new found skills develop, they will begin feel better about themselves, happier healthier and more in control of their lives within a very short space of time
